The Revision of Logical Laws
Silver Professor and Professor of Philosophy Can there be rational reasons for revising our most fundamental logical rules (for instance, the rule of inferring from A to A or B; or the rule of inferring from A or B and not A to B)? I think there can. Nonetheless, the supposition that there can be rational reasons for such revisions gives rise to a wide variety of puzzles, which have led some ph...

Strongly irresolvable spaces
Several new characterizations of strongly irresolvable topological spaces are found and precise relationships are noted between strong irresolvability, hereditary irresolvability, and submaximality. It is noted that strong irresolvablity is a faint topological property, while neither hereditary irresolvablity nor submaximality are semitopological.
Fitch's Paradox and Probabilistic Antirealism
Fitch’s paradox shows, from fairly innocent-looking assumptions, that if there are any unknown truths, then there are unknowable truths. This is generally thought to deliver a blow to antirealist positions that imply that all truths are knowable. The present paper argues that a probabilistic version of antirealism escapes Fitch’s result while still offering all that antirealists should care for...
Bias-Driven Revision of Logical Domain Theories
The theory revision problem is the problem of how best to go about revising a deficient domain theory using information contained in examples that expose inaccuracies. In this paper we present our approach to the theory revision problem for propositional domain theories. The approach described here, called PTR, uses probabilities associated with domain theory elements to numerically track the ‘...
